We operate with 2 staff members and more than 125 volunteers! We are grateful for every hour that our volunteers give us – and we couldn’t do what we do without them. If you’re interested in putting your talents to work, we are happy to find a place for you! We have 3 ways to volunteer:
Our Board of Directors is made up of community leaders who can think big, will make connections for us, will support and advocate for our projects, and are able to balance the needs and concerns of both the residents of Beverly and the business community. Directors serve on a committee for at least a year before being invited to join the Board.
Our Committees: We have five standing committees which meet monthly and oversee a wide variety of initiatives. Most volunteers make a long-term commitment (1 year or more) so they can see the work through to completion. The committees require a combination of people who have expertise in the area and people who have an interest but might not consider themselves experts. Committees that offer volunteer opportunities in 2018 are:
Economic Development – review zoning and city ordinances that impact the downtown and suggest changes / additions; create a property owner engagement program; start to plan for Downtown 2030
Design – create and manage programs that impact the “look and feel” of downtown; specific projects include managing the city’s Façade and Sign Improvement Program, and coordinating our annual ‘blank canvas” banner design project and banner sales.
Beverly Arts District – advocate for the needs of local artists (ie, zoning for artist live/work spaces which was adopted in 2017); promote local artists and cultural activities that happen downtown; hire artists to create public art (ie, the Red Fence Gallery); provide financial support to local artists who host programming in the downtown (ie, ComicCon)
Our Events: We host several major events throughout the year that require two types of volunteers: those who can help plan and manage the event and those who can volunteer on the day of the event. We look for volunteers who can think big, some who can dive into the details and some who like to raise money! Event committees typically meet bimonthly for the 3-4 months leading up to an event. There are often work assignments to be done in between the meetings (like listen to bands, put up lawn signs, etc). On the day of the event, we need volunteers who can be on hand for the entire event or for a minimum 2-hour shift.
