Maria Peñil is a mixed media artist born in Santander, Spain. She grew up in a small fishing village called San Vicente de la Barquera, surrounded by sea, rivers, mountains and spectacular landscapes.
In her pieces, the visible clashes with art and nature, and oscillates between process and object, between internal and external. It’s a formal investigation towards organic shapes. Maria mainly works with natural mediums, like hemp, bees wax, wood, branches, thread and fabrics. Based on this, she elaborates on hand-made pieces involving irregular shapes which the material that she used, produced. Maria creates interior worlds based on those organic shapes growing and developing. Her inspiration is the natural world as a living, self-regulation system, where everything participates of in everything and the mystery behind all this life; sea, earth, animals, fossils, shells, vegetation, minerals, nests, biology, textures, shapes, process.
